How to choose an online AI course without paying for the wrong fit

A practical worksheet for choosing an AI course: goals, prerequisites, projects, support and the total fee. With questions to send the provider.

The useful starting point

Choose the course by the project you want to complete, your current coding skills and the support you need. Ask for a current syllabus, a sample lesson and written fee and refund terms before paying. A certificate alone does not show whether a course fits your goal.

Start with a project, not a certificate

Write one sentence: ‘After this course I want to build ____ for ____.’ A text summarizer, a basic prediction model and a production application require different learning paths. Then list what you can already do independently. If you cannot name an output you want, try a free introductory lesson before buying a substantial program.

Create a three-column note: task, evidence that the syllabus teaches it, and the project you will submit. An attractive course title does not fill the evidence column.

Check the starting level

Ask which Python tasks and mathematics topics the first assignment assumes. Try the readiness exercise in our prerequisites guide. If your gaps are substantial, use a short preparation plan rather than hoping the live class will cover everything.

The Coursera Machine Learning Specialization lists basic coding and school mathematics as starting knowledge. Edureka describes a mix of live and self-paced learning for its Generative AI program. These are different learning goals; neither description establishes a universal winner.

Ask for proof of support

Before enrolling, ask who answers project questions, whether code receives individual feedback and how quickly support responds. Request a sample assignment and its assessment criteria. If a program advertises career support, ask for the precise service and eligibility rules. Treat a salary graphic or learner testimonial as a marketing claim rather than a personal outcome prediction.

Use this message before paying

‘My goal is ____. My current skills are ____. Please send the current syllabus, prerequisite checklist, sample lesson, next batch timetable in my time zone, project feedback arrangements, complete payable fee including taxes, and the refund and rescheduling terms that apply to this enrolment. Please clarify whether the certificate is a provider completion certificate or an academic qualification.’

Keep the response and checkout terms. If the provider cannot explain what you will do each week, postpone the purchase. There is no verified current Indian fee on this page; use the provider’s own checkout quote.

Choose a manageable weekly commitment

Block study time in your actual calendar, including revision and project work. A two-hour lecture can require additional practice; do not equate video length with learning time. If your available hours change every week, prioritize flexible pacing. If you repeatedly abandon self-paced lessons, scheduled classes may help, provided you can attend them.

Review the learning-format comparison and the course fee checklist next. Save relevant course finds in a basket only after they clear your own fit criteria.
