The useful starting point
Use the exact brand’s measurement chart rather than the age label alone. Check each piece of a set, choose a fit that allows comfortable everyday movement, and confirm fastenings, washing requirements and returns. Buying a much larger size for growth can leave the garment unsuitable for use now.
Use the chart instead of guessing from age
Record the child’s current measurements following the brand’s instructions, along with the date and units. Compare height and the other measurements the chart actually uses. Keep ‘age 5–6’ separate from a measurement-based fit decision.
For a two-piece night suit or outfit, check both top and bottom. If the chart describes body measurements, do not compare them directly with a flat garment width. When a chart is incomplete, ask the seller for the missing information rather than guessing from a styled photograph.
Think through a normal day
List the activities the outfit is for: school, play, an occasion or bedtime. Check sleeves and trouser length, the waistband method and how the garment is put on and taken off. Choose fastenings appropriate to the child’s abilities and the intended use.
On arrival, check whether the child can sit and move comfortably and whether hems drag or sleeves interfere with ordinary tasks. Do not treat additional room as automatically better. Follow manufacturer age, use and safety instructions for the specific product.
Compare the practical details
| Detail | What to write down |
|---|---|
| Fit | Current measurements, chart basis and selected size |
| Dressing | Waist adjustment, closures and opening size |
| Contents | Each included piece and any separately sold accessories |
| Care | Stated composition, wash and drying instructions |
| Purchase terms | Return eligibility, delivery date and exchange availability |
Check that the outfit fits your actual laundry routine. A special-care occasion outfit and everyday clothing meet different needs; evaluate them separately instead of filling a cart with an entire future-size wardrobe.
Review one purchase before repeating it
If the brand is new to you, resolve fit questions and check terms before buying multiples. Inspect the first delivery for correct size, intact seams and consistency with the description. Keep tags until the fit decision is complete under the retailer’s conditions.
Record what worked so the next order starts with evidence. Growth changes the measurements, so update your note rather than relying indefinitely on the previous size. For shoes, play mats and other essentials, use the separate baby and kids checklist.
