The useful starting point
Use the size chart for the exact garment, confirm whether it describes body or finished garment measurements, and compare its fabric and care requirements with clothes you already enjoy wearing. Check return eligibility for the selected item before paying; your usual size letter is only a starting point.
Start with something that already fits
Pick a similar garment you comfortably wear for the same purpose. Record its measurements using the retailer’s measurement method. Keep flat widths separate from full circumferences, and use the same unit throughout. A 50 cm flat chest width is not a 50 cm chest circumference.
If the chart lists body measurements, compare it with your body measurements instead. If it lists finished garment measurements, compare a similar garment. When the chart does not explain which it uses, ask the seller before choosing a size. Do not add an arbitrary allowance to a chart that already accounts for the intended fit.
Check the fabric beyond the headline
Save the stated fibre composition, lining, stretch description and washing instructions. ‘Cotton blend’ and ‘silk blend’ leave important details unanswered unless the composition is given. Ask for the percentages if they matter to your decision. A studio image cannot tell you how a fabric feels, whether it is see-through, or how it will behave after washing.
Choose care requirements you can maintain. A piece needing professional cleaning may suit an occasional event but create extra work in a frequently worn wardrobe. Treat texture, colour and comfort as details to verify on arrival, not guarantees from a photograph.

Fill gaps with ‘unknown’. An unanswered fit question should remain visible even when an item has a large discount. Compare the selected colour and size, because another variant may have different availability or terms.
Check the return route and inspect on arrival
Read whether the item is returnable, exchange-only or final sale. Check when the window starts, whether pickup is available at your postcode, who pays shipping, and whether refunds return to the payment method or store credit. Keep a copy of the terms that apply at checkout.
On arrival, inspect the item and try it according to the retailer’s conditions while keeping tags and packaging. Check sitting comfort, sleeve reach and overall length before altering or washing it.
