Choose a shirt by its actual measurements and intended use, then verify shoulder, chest, sleeve and length details using the seller’s chart. ‘Regular fit’ and ‘slim fit’ describe the maker’s cut; they do not replace measurements or confirm how the shirt will feel on you.
Decide how you will wear the shirt
Start with a use: tucked-in office wear, an untucked casual outfit or a layer over a T-shirt. Pick a comfortable existing shirt worn the same way. Record what you like about its shoulder position, sleeve length and overall length.
A shirt bought for layering needs a different comparison garment from one worn close to the body. Do not choose a larger letter size solely to change the cut; first check the measurements and how the retailer describes the intended fit.
Compare the measurements that change the fit

Check the full stated composition, lining if any, fastening details and washing instructions. If a shirt is described as easy-care or wrinkle-resistant, record that as the seller’s claim unless there is evidence to support it. A checked print does not establish the fabric quality.
Decide whether you can follow the stated drying and ironing instructions. Look closely at pocket placement and pattern photographs if those details affect your choice. Treat screen colour and apparent texture as details to inspect when the parcel arrives.
Make the final fit decision before washing
Check the exact item’s return and exchange terms before paying. On arrival, inspect the shirt and try normal sitting and arm movements while following the retailer’s conditions. Check whether the collar, cuffs or buttons are uncomfortable and whether the intended outfit works.
